Well, my ole Garmin bit the dust on the “Double Trouble” (200 mi in a day with 100 mi in the rain). I’m now looking for a replacement computer. Do you have any suggestions? I really like wireless stuff and got kinda attached to the gradient the ole Garmin displayed. Beyond that I’m not to fussy. Do you have a good suggestion. Price IS an issue.
Thanks for your help and insights.

May 21, 2012 at 3:39 PM #1976what im thinking is you do not nead a GPS anyways. The world is meant to be looked at and you cant look at it when your head is burried in the computer trying to find out where you need to be. Get lost, thats some of the fun in it! Nothing like going down a road you have never been down only to realize it brings you out somewhere cool. If I was you I would just get a computer that picks up miles, rpm, distance…that type of stuff but you dont have to get one that shows you where to turn. lol. Bontrager Node 1 or 2
June 3, 2012 at 7:07 PM #1998Flight Deck, uh, don’t you have to run Shi Ma NO for that? Wound up with an Edge 500. I like it so far. Was much more money than I’d liked but it’s a definite step up from the 305. If it’ll last ten years the cost can be “justified.”
Another good selling point is that the 500 works with the heart rate strap and cadence sensor from the 305. Save some bucks there. If you’re into power output the 500 can do that too if you’ve got the proper hardware on the bike.
Stephen you’ve got a point. Sometimes I too tend to get a little techy but the Garmin can be ignored until after the ride. Then it’s kinda fun to see heart rate, cadence, hills, speed, etc. I’ve had a Garmin for quite some time and have never used the mapping feature. I depend on Mike R or Bob C for that.
June 22, 2012 at 4:28 PM #2020After several weeks with the new ‘puter here’s an update on the Edge 500 purchase.
No complaints yet. A couple other things I’ve noticed and like a lot:
1. battery lasts nearly twice as long as the 305 at 18 hrs
2. the mounting system is MUCH nicer, 90 degree twist on or off no funky tab that breaks off like on the previous edge series
3. the computer flashes a reminder screen if you forget to start the computer and detects the bike is moving
4. 4 pages of parameters you can customize with up to 8 items per page
5. satellite acquisition is much quicker -
