He’s thinking kids 10 & up can participate in this cycling clinic starting in March after Daylight Savings Time kicks in. The group will meet at West Middle School and ride a minimum of 8 miles. The clinic will focus on preride inspection, basic maintenance, flat repair, riding etiquette, etc. If you or someone you know would like to participate as a participant or volunteer helper, chime in here and let Jason know. We’re shooting for a group of maybe 8 to 10 youngsters. Scouts could even use this clinic to achieve their Bicycle Merit Badge.

I plan to arrive at West Middle School about 2:30 to get ready for the group. Before we start the ride, I want to talk to the kids about safety to find out what they already know and to, hopefully, tell them a few things they might not know yet. I will also have a floor pump with me to top off any tires as needed. I have mapped out a six-mile route that will have a couple of hills that may seem a little big for a beginner, but we can help them push through with proper gear selection. Leaving WMS, we will turn left on Turkey Creek and follow it to the stop sign at Holt. Turning right, we will go to Linda Lane and turn right, then make a quick loop on Williamsburg Circle. After completing the circle, we will head back to WMS. If the kids want to keep riding, we can work our way though the Blue Creek neighborhood for another two or three miles. We’ll just play it by ear. Ideally, I would like an adult in front and one in the rear, along with adults riding to the left of the group of kids. While the kids will need to learn about sharing the road with cars, until they get used to riding on the road, we will likely ride with adults on the left to create a buffer for traffic.
